Garden Photography for Beginners

with Eva Nemeth

Saturday 5 July 2025

10am - 4pm (arrive at 9.30 for coffee/tea)

£160

Group Size - 8 people

This workshop is designed for those of you who are new to using your camera or who perhaps have had one for a while but are feeling in need of a refresher. You might be feeling a bit stuck on auto mode and daunted by all the technical options.

Eva will begin by exploring the importance of observation, encouraging you to tune into what you really want to draw attention to in the photograph. She’ll explain how to consider the composition of the image as well as how to work with natural light to the best effect before going on to discuss the technicalities of aperture settings, shutter speed, iso and light metering.

You will be able to spend time outside in the garden to put things into practice and as it is a small group Eva will have time to give everyone some 1:1 tuition.

Eva will also go through her editing process and we’ll end the day with tea and cake and an opportunity to answer any outstanding queries.

If the weather happens to restrict our time outdoors Eva will also cover how to capture a still life with natural lighting and composing a flat lay.

The day is aimed primarily at those wanting to make more use of their DSLR cameras, although there is plenty that will be relevant if you are mainly using your phone to take photographs.

Eva Nemeth is a professional photographer based in Oxfordshire with a passion for gardens, flowers and the countryside. She works with some of the UK’s best garden designers and florists and her work features regularly in magazines such as House and Gardens and Gardens Illustrated. She has been commissioned to photography many books, the latest of which is Wonderlands, British Garden Designers at Home with Clare Coulson. Her teaching style is encouraging and generous.

Lunch

Alison will prepare a simple vegetarian lunch including produce from the garden. We will round up the day with tea and cake. If you have any specific dietary requests do let us know on the booking form.

What to Bring

DSLR camera, spare memory card and batteries as well as a tripod if you use one.   We will be spending part of the day outdoors in the garden so you might want to wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring waterproofs.  You may wish to bring a notebook and your own water bottle.
